Many years ago, we visited some artist friends’ studios on Kielsevest in Antwerp’s Zuid district. Set in former officers’ quarters of the Brialmont fortifications, they were surrounded by a beautiful, overgrown garden. There, a remarkable old Taxus baccata caught our eye…
We discovered that the city-owned houses and garden would soon make way for a new fire station. Determined to save the tree, we began discussions with everyone involved.
After years of lobbying and countless emails, permission finally came in early 2022, just before felling and demolition began. We quickly arranged the necessary permits, prepared the tree and transported it to our nursery.
Today, this 10-metre-tall Taxus baccata, estimated to be 100 years old and with a stem circumference of 150 cm, stands proudly at our nursery.
Do you know of a special tree facing the axe, standing in the way of a building project or outgrowing its space? Get in touch! We’d love to see if we can give it a second chance at our nursery.
